The Most Common Automatic Gate Problems and What They Mean

A person in a car using a button to open an automatic gate outside a home.

Automatic gates have the power to elevate curb appeal and strengthen security. Unfortunately, much like everything else in life, they can fall into disrepair. This isn’t too surprising since they are constantly exposed to changing weather conditions and used frequently throughout a single day. The good news is that the professionals at Arizona’s Best Garage Door and Repair Company are here to help you understand, diagnose, and repair the most common automatic gate problems. If you’re having issues with your electric driveway or RV gate, check out this list of problems to find out what’s going on.

You Can’t Get the Gate to Open or Close

Perhaps the most frustrating automatic gate problem is a gate that refuses to budge. After all, a gate that will not open or close is a barricade to your plans. More often than not, a gate that has stopped working is often an indicator of a power failure. Before calling a professional, check to see if there’s been a power outage in your area. Once the power is restored, your electric gate should work like normal.

If this isn’t the case, the gate’s motor may have worn out. You will need to contact a certified contractor for a new one. Fortunately, we provide automatic gate opener services in Phoenix, AZ, and beyond and can get your gate working smoothly in no time.

The Gate Is Noisy

Automatic electric gates are virtually silent, so they shouldn’t make you cringe when they open or close. However, when it’s past time for maintenance, they may begin to make unpleasant sounds. You can fix this automatic gate problem by applying grease or oil to its moving parts. However, it’s important to note that some electric gate noises could be the cause of a malfunctioning motor. If lubricating the gate doesn’t take care of the unusual sounds, it’s time to get in touch with the pros for a new opener.

The Remote Control Doesn’t Work

Just as you can’t turn on your television with a faulty remote control, you will not be able to get your gate to move with a dying remote, no matter how many times you punch the button. The good news is that this common automatic gate problem has an easy fix. Simply replace the batteries in the remote. If the problem persists, you’ll need to get a new remote. Just make sure the replacement remote is compatible with your gate system.

The Gate Jerks When Moving

Does your automatic gate jerk or jump around when opening and closing? This is often a sign that the gate’s tracks are obstructed. Clearing away sticks, rocks, and debris from the tracks should help your gate run smoothly.

If you can’t see anything limiting the movement of your gate, this could mean the tracks themselves are the problem. If the tracks are worn, you’ll need to schedule an electric driveway gate repair to get your gate working properly once again.

The System Is Stuck in Manual Mode

If you’ve checked everything else, and you’re still having trouble getting your gate to move, the problem may lie with the mode your system is set to. When the system detects a potential problem with the batteries in your remote or the gate’s opener, it may switch to manual mode. When this happens, you will not be able to open and close the gate automatically. Be sure to change the remote’s batteries and ensure nothing is obstructing the gate’s sensors. This should return the system to automatic mode.

No doubt they are the best garage door company in the valley. Had them out to replace an opener, springs, rod and gave me a very good quote to add a 2nd opener on the small door. Cody was the technician doing the work, great guy, very helpful and took his time explaining my options.

Really saved our night. When we discovered the spring had broken on our garage door, locking our cars inside, it was a stressful situation. At first we thought we’d have to wait til morning but Arizona’s Best Garage Door got technicians over the same night, fixed the door at a fair price, and got us unstuck in time for me to pick up my teenager (saving us Uber money). They did a great estimate and stuck to it. And when my big dog barked at strangers in the house they both took time to put him at ease. It was an excellent resolution to our little emergency

Google verified job · Very responsive ! I am the landlord and this is a rental for me. It was almost as if I was there but didn’t have to be. Travis communicated with me, sent pictures/video, cared about my budget, went above and beyond with a temporary fix until a replacement door could be installed. Made sure I benefited from current incentives, price was reasonable. Travis was my main point of contact and could not have been better. I have never given any service 5 stars. REALLY impressed and positive about this experience. Thank you so much !

Tim & Cody were great. Cody explained everything in details and terms I could understand. Cody made special accommodations for my handicap and made me feel at ease with his professionalism. He is dedicated to his craft and it shows. My only complaint would be with google for only letting me rate up to 5 stars when they deserve a lot more. Great company, excellent service, could not of dreamed of any better. Thanks a Million Guys!!

I’m not one to post or post comments but I have to Arizona’s Best Garage Door has DEFINITELY lived up to its positive reputation that others have commented on. Our spring broke on the garage door. We replaced the spring, cable and opted to get a new opener. I experienced the same great customer service from the beginning when the appt was scheduled over the phone to the moment when the technician Travis completed the work. Travis was friendly and thorough to explain the operation of the wi if opener we installed. I would use this company again and highly recommend to anyone in need of garage door repair.

Came out and completed requested repairs on my garage doors and as completing inspection, found several other ares that they recommended replacement parts. Most of the parts were original to the home (1995) so I wanted peace of mind that our doors would function with no issues moving forward. Our technician, Travis, took the time to explain what he saw and was very through in his work. Thanks again and will highly recommend.

Fast, fair, friendly. Understanding I’m a baller on a budget. They communicated any needs I may also need but didn’t pressure any sales. I like that. There was a training session going on with a newbie worker and they hire some outstanding people. This place is legit. Finally, the communication from their dispatch was outstanding. I wasn’t nervous about price or nothing. They were straight forward. Good stuff guys!
