My Garage Door Won’t Close All the Way — What’s Going On?

A man looking at a garage door part.

The last thing anyone wants is for their garage door to have trouble properly closing. It’s one thing when the door has trouble opening, but one that can’t close exposes your home, car, and other important items to the outside world. For most people, this is an unnecessarily stressful and dangerous time, but you can begin the process of solving your problems by knowing what stops doors from working. With our garage door company’s expertise, let’s look at the most common things that cause your garage door to stay open.

Springs Are Broken

Springs are one of the most important parts of your garage door. They’re responsible for holding up the door’s weight and balancing the tension as it opens and closes. Broken springs can lead to misaligned doors, throwing off the operation, damaging additional parts, and leading to a door that won’t completely shut. Don’t try to fix springs yourself; they can be extremely dangerous, and a local broken garage spring repair company is better equipped to handle the job.

Safety Sensors Are Malfunctioning

Safety sensors are an important addition to your door. They alert you of any items or objects in the way instead of simply crushing them. When the safety sensors malfunction, they won’t be able to accurately determine whether something is in the way. Check the sensors for a blinking light, and make sure that the red dots are aligned properly. If they aren’t, alignment is usually the main issue. If that doesn’t work, your sensors might have a bigger problem.

Cables Have Snapped

Cables and springs work hand in hand to maintain the weight of your door. These products are either responsible for the door’s weight or keeping broken springs from snapping off and flying out at anything in its path. With so much responsibility, cables have a lifespan of about 10-15 years before they’re liable to snap off. Homeowners who notice dangling cables or a giant weight distribution should avoid using their door and immediately contact a professional.

The Tracks Are Bent

Tracks keep your door in place, giving it direction and stability as it moves up and down. Just like a messy dirt road, if your tracks are bent or misaligned, it can mean a failure for your door to work properly. Tracks can become damaged due to debris in the way or accidental bumps or dents taken by the door. Inspect the condition of the tracks, and if it looks damaged, your local garage company can provide help.

Your Door Travel Limits Are Incorrect

Your limit settings tell the opener how far to move the door down the tracks. If tracks aren’t the issue, it might be that your settings are incorrect. You’ll usually notice this after the door was installed or after maintenance and repairs were completed, and the original setting wasn’t reapplied. You can adjust the limit settings with some help, but the best bet is always to turn to an expert.

Something Might Be in the Way

Sometimes, problems are as simple as something being in the way of your door. It can be a weird sight at first to see your garage door fail to close, but it doesn’t always mean there’s an issue. Evaluate the space around the door and see if any boxes, objects, or even your car are sticking out. It might not be that the door has an issue but that it’s trying to prevent one from happening in the first place.

No doubt they are the best garage door company in the valley. Had them out to replace an opener, springs, rod and gave me a very good quote to add a 2nd opener on the small door. Cody was the technician doing the work, great guy, very helpful and took his time explaining my options.

Really saved our night. When we discovered the spring had broken on our garage door, locking our cars inside, it was a stressful situation. At first we thought we’d have to wait til morning but Arizona’s Best Garage Door got technicians over the same night, fixed the door at a fair price, and got us unstuck in time for me to pick up my teenager (saving us Uber money). They did a great estimate and stuck to it. And when my big dog barked at strangers in the house they both took time to put him at ease. It was an excellent resolution to our little emergency

Google verified job · Very responsive ! I am the landlord and this is a rental for me. It was almost as if I was there but didn’t have to be. Travis communicated with me, sent pictures/video, cared about my budget, went above and beyond with a temporary fix until a replacement door could be installed. Made sure I benefited from current incentives, price was reasonable. Travis was my main point of contact and could not have been better. I have never given any service 5 stars. REALLY impressed and positive about this experience. Thank you so much !

Tim & Cody were great. Cody explained everything in details and terms I could understand. Cody made special accommodations for my handicap and made me feel at ease with his professionalism. He is dedicated to his craft and it shows. My only complaint would be with google for only letting me rate up to 5 stars when they deserve a lot more. Great company, excellent service, could not of dreamed of any better. Thanks a Million Guys!!

I’m not one to post or post comments but I have to Arizona’s Best Garage Door has DEFINITELY lived up to its positive reputation that others have commented on. Our spring broke on the garage door. We replaced the spring, cable and opted to get a new opener. I experienced the same great customer service from the beginning when the appt was scheduled over the phone to the moment when the technician Travis completed the work. Travis was friendly and thorough to explain the operation of the wi if opener we installed. I would use this company again and highly recommend to anyone in need of garage door repair.

Came out and completed requested repairs on my garage doors and as completing inspection, found several other ares that they recommended replacement parts. Most of the parts were original to the home (1995) so I wanted peace of mind that our doors would function with no issues moving forward. Our technician, Travis, took the time to explain what he saw and was very through in his work. Thanks again and will highly recommend.

Fast, fair, friendly. Understanding I’m a baller on a budget. They communicated any needs I may also need but didn’t pressure any sales. I like that. There was a training session going on with a newbie worker and they hire some outstanding people. This place is legit. Finally, the communication from their dispatch was outstanding. I wasn’t nervous about price or nothing. They were straight forward. Good stuff guys!
